Compounding

Compounding enables pharmacists to prepare medications for patients who have unique health needs that cannot be met by a one-size-fits-all prescription. Compounded medications are made by mixing ingredients from scratch, one prescription at a time. This is incredibly important for patients who need a specific dose or format of a medication, have an allergy, cannot swallow pills or tablets, or who need a drug that is commercially unavailable or back-ordered. Patients depend on compounded medications for a better quality of life.

An ancient art and science, compounding dates back to the beginning of pharmacy, and mostly all medications were compounded up until the mid-20th century when mass manufacturing of drugs became more common. Recently, the need for compounded medications has increased as patients and health care providers realize that commercial medications are not effective for everyone.

First Care Pharmacy continues the tradition of compounding by specifically tailoring medications to the needs of individuals. Our philosophy is patient-centered, and our trained and licensed pharmacists work directly with health care providers and patients to prepare the most effective, personalized medications with the best ingredients.

Compounded medications are used for the following purposes:

Allergy-Free

Many patients are allergic to gluten, soy, dairy and other allergens. First Care Pharmacy  individually prepares medications free of allergens and dyes.

Personalized Medication Formats

Medications only available in a pill or tablet form can be converted into a liquid, topical cream or gel, or lozenge. This is important for patients who cannot swallow (e.g. an infant, senior, or patient recovering from surgery) and patients who benefit from direct application of medication on the skin (e.g. patients with wounds, scars and burns).

Personalized Medication Dosages

Many patients require a specific dosage that is not commercially available. First Care Pharmacy can prepare any dosage of a medication that is prescribed.

Commercially Unavailable Drugs

First Care Pharmacy makes medications that are not commercially available, whether in short supply or discontinued.

Flavoring

First Care Pharmacy makes medicine taste appealing and can compound assorted flavors for medications, including cherry, grape and bubble gum.
